A Page Play is the culminating presentation of our 10-week Playwriting Program in which professional actors perform the students’ original play with script’s in hand, while the students take the stage to demonstrate how they collaboratively developed the play using improvisation and writing exercises. Our students’ Page Play this year is titled: Fear, Family, and Finding Acceptance! Kris, a transgender teen and child of adoption, feels misunderstood and ostracized by their family and peers. As a way of escape, Kris retreats into the fantasy world of a fairytale book left to them by their biological mother thats tells the story of peaceful genderless gummy people. After discovering a secret hidden in the book, Kris runs away in search of the gummy people and a home where they can feel accepted, but in the end discovers their true home and acceptance was closer than they thought.

Join The Unusual Suspects for an exciting evening of staged readings, cocktails and conversation. Doors open at 6pm and show begins at 7pm! Grab your friends for a drink at Three Clubs in Hollywood and watch a talented lineup of professional actors bring the inspiring theatrical work of our students to life in a new and exciting venue. To celebrate this year’s upcoming Spring Performance season, all selections will be from our 2016-2017 season of scripts! 6:00 pm:  doors open 7:00 pm: show begins 8:00 pm: more drinks and conversation! $10 suggested donation at the door. *Sorry, this one is 21 and older only.

The talented Unusual Suspects participants at San Fernando High School have written an original play that they will perform in a free public show on Friday, March 24th! A young scientist is condemned for crimes he did not commit and loses control of his project. Years later, working as a university custodian he finds help in a bright young rebel who gains intense powers through their research together. By chance, they come across the son of an evil scientist who wants revenge. Their lives are deeply connected and together they will fight for justice and the safety of free will everywhere in the brand new epic adventure of “Down the Babbit Hole.”

A tragic event occurs in the Connor family setting off a series of events that challenge Christina Connor, the middle child, in a way that she never expected. She must find the courage to use her special new powers to keep her family safe and keep them all together.

Neighborhood Voices Intergenerational Performance

As part of The Unusual Suspects’ Neighborhood Voices Program, a group of Northeast San Fernando Valley community members, ages 10 and up, wrote an original play that speaks to issues they see in their community. The group will perform the play on Thursday, April 13, 2017. The play is entitled “Fearless Fire Within: Esperanza Forjada en Fuego | Hope Forged in Fire:” A family’s epic journey to stay together in an enchanted world filled with many obstacles and blessings. They must search to find the fire within and ignite the strength needed to survive against all odds. El viaje épico de una familia para permanecer juntos en un mundo encantado, lleno de muchos obstáculos y bendiciones. Tienen que buscar para encontrar el fuego adentro y encender la fuerza necesaria para sobrevivir contra toda posibilidad. The talented Unusual Suspects youth at Camp David Gonzales have written an original play that will be read during a Page Play on Saturday, June 10th! In an exciting partnership with LA County Probation Camp David Gonzales, The Unusual Suspects leads a 10-week writing workshop where incarcerated youth work together to write their original play. A Page Play is the culminating presentation of our Playwriting Program. Professional actors will perform the youth’s original play with scripts in hand, while the students take the stage to talk about how they wrote the play together using improvisation and writing exercises. **Non-facility/staff audience MUST RSVP for this event no later than May 24th in order to attend. Camp David Gonzales Performance of “Reflection: The Rico Story”

The talented Unusual Suspects minors at Camp David Gonzales have written an original play that they will perform on Friday, August 25th and Saturday, August 26th! In an exciting partnership with LA County Probation Camp David Gonzales, The Unusual Suspects are leading a 10-week performance workshop in which incarcerated youth are working together to perform an original play that they wrote earlier this spring. Their play, “Reflection: The Rico Story” follows RICO, who grew up in a tough neighborhood with his mother, THERESA who was raising three children on her own.  With a baby on the way and his family struggling through a difficult time to make ends meet, RICO takes it unto to himself to make money in whatever way possible to support his loved ones.  Although he begins doing honest work, it isn’t enough.
