A Page Play is the culminating presentation of our 10-week Playwriting Program in which professional actors perform the students’ original play with script’s in hand, while the students take the stage to demonstrate how they collaboratively developed the play using improvisation and writing exercises.

Unusual Suspects youth at Camp Jarvis have been collaborating over the last 12 weeks on original theatrical writings. During their Presentation of Learning on Sunday, March 18th, they will lead the audience through a typical theatre arts workshop and will perform their original work. **This event is limited to facility staff/family/and pre-approved audience. The talented Unusual Suspects Middle School participants at Maclay Academy of Social Justice have written an original play that they will perform in a free public show on Friday, March 23rd! Their script follows Feliciana Octoli after her father re-marries a younger woman. When Feliciana is possessed by the spirit of her biological mother, she must take an epic journey from her family’s giraffe farm to faraway China. Along the way she encounters bullies, talking giraffes, and ancient spirits. She also learns valuable lessons about resolving conflict and the power of family. And coconuts.

Neighborhood Voices Intergenerational Performance

As part of The Unusual Suspects’ Neighborhood Voices Program, a group of Northeast San Fernando Valley community members, ages 10 and up, are writing an original play that speaks to issues they see in their community. The group will perform their play on Friday, April 6, 2018. This year’s play is The Tale of the Mysterious Switch!  Poppy, a unicorn, and Jessie-G, a pop star, are unhappy with their lives until a mysterious Shapeshifter offers them the chance to switch places. Once they switch lives, they discover that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. With the help of a dragon and two ninjas, they uncover the true intentions of the Shapeshifter and devise a plan to stop him before he takes over the human world and the magical land of the Purple Waters of Wateria. The talented Unusual Suspects participants at San Fernando High School have written an original play that they will perform in a free public show on Friday, April 13th! Their script follows a distraught Lykos—just a few hours away from his 18th birthday—as he must embark on a journey with his friends to find healing before he turns into a full werewolf for eternity. In order to earn healing, dictated by The Ultimate Wizard, they must survive through a magical land full of angry dragons, evil gummy bears and whistling dinosaurs.

The talented Unusual Suspects students at Edison Middle School have written an original play that they will perform in a free public show on Friday, April 27th! In their play we meet junior high student Jules, who is trying to deal with the stress of family and school. To make matters more complicated, he discovers he now has supernatural powers that come at a cost. Chaos ensues as he tries to navigate his abilities when his best friend (or rather, former best friend) Jojo’s father goes missing after he causes an accidental explosion. This ignites a journey that includes angry robot dogs, castles, lions, power plants, and papayas.

The talented Unusual Suspects middle-school participants at the Vaughn Next Century Learning Center have written an original play that they will perform in a free public performance on Friday, May 18th! “Rise of the Dangels” tells the story of Hazel and Arin, who are sisters. Hazel dreams of one day becoming a famous painter, while Arin longs for the stage and the spotlight. After getting news of their parents’ divorce, the sisters discover the mythical secrets of their family’s origin and are forced to choose: go with their Mother Athena, powerful royalty of the underworld, or their father Lucy a kind but humble man. Their choices send the two sisters down very different paths, and we follow both journeys as they navigate the dangerous, romantic, and magical consequences of their decision. The talented Unusual Suspects youth at Dorothy Kirby Center (Juvenile Detention Camp) have written an original play that will be performed by professional actors as a staged reading during their Page Play on Saturday, June 30th! Through a partnership with LA County Probation at Dorothy Kirby Center, The Unusual Suspects leads a 10-week writing workshop where incarcerated youth work together to write an original play. A Page Play is the culminating presentation of our Playwriting Program. Professional actors will perform the youth’s original play with scripts in hand, while the students take the stage to talk about how they wrote the play together using improvisation and writing exercises. **Audience members MUST RSVP for this event by JUNE 1st in order to attend, due to required Probation clearance screenings. Time: 1:00 PM In an exciting partnership with LA County Probation at Dorothy Kirby Center, The Unusual Suspects are leading a 10-week performance workshop in which incarcerated youth are working together to perform an original play that they wrote earlier this spring. Three young women — the sisters Autumn and Jan Grace, and Blessin Yasmine Lorraine Alvarado — lose their parents at very young ages. They grow up in separate foster homes, all searching for justice and a place to call home. After Jan disappears under mysterious circumstances, Autumn and Blessin meet during a chance encounter.
