Our Response to COVID-19

Due to the latest developments around COVID-19/novel coronavirus, and under direction from LAUSD and public health officials, Unusual Suspects performances will not be presented in-person until it is deemed safe to do so. The Unusual Suspects Theatre Company is committed to the health and safety of all our constituents as well as members of the community. Our Act Up with US elementary school drama program is a 12-week writing workshop that brings 3rd – 5th grade students together to create & perform their own morality play. This fun and intensive experience benefit children’s development in physical, artistic, cognitive, personal, and intra-personal skills. Participants demonstrate other gains, as well, such as the ability to collaborate in an ensemble, self- confidence, speaking, writing, listening, and goal achievement. Sepulveda Middle School Performance Viewing

Sepulveda Middle School students will share a recording of their performance of their originally-written play from Fall 2019, “The Three Royals of Euphoria.” The online viewing will be followed by a moderated post-show discussion of the play’s themes.* Synopsis: When the Kingdom of Euphoria runs out of money, the King and Queen tell their children they must marry royals from an enemy kingdom to save Euphoria. The children instead embark on a dangerous quest for a magic gem that can help them save the kingdom. San Fernando High School Performance Viewing

June 5

San Fernando High School students will share a recording of their live performance of their originally-written play from Fall 2019, “Blood Over Water.” The online viewing will be followed by a moderated post-show discussion of the play’s themes.* Synopsis: The relationship between the Sea Dwellers and the Land Dwellers is a strained one due to the human pollution entering the ocean. To make matters worse, BETTE, a human mafia boss, and LILITH, a devious siren, have joined forces to start a war amongst the two factions. Markham Middle School Performance Preview

Markham Middle School students will share a recording of their live performance of their originally-written play from Fall 2019, “Generations: The Chaotic Martinez Family.”  The online viewing will be followed by a moderated post-show discussion on what the youth have learned throughout the performance process. Synopsis: Alex Martinez is a teen on a quest to find her dad.  However, her mom cautions her against it for fear of Alex being harmed by dark forces.  After receiving a vision that Dad has been kidnapped, it is now up to Alex – and her powerful Grandmother Maria – to rescue him and hopefully bring reconciliation to the family. *If interested, please contact rsvp@theunusualsuspects.org for a link to the online viewing event.

Neighborhood Voices Performance

Students, parents, and elders come together for our community based, intergenerational playwriting and performance workshop. Our intergenerational Neighborhood Voices program is a 12-week intensive workshop that brings parents and adult community members together to create & perform their own modernized fable alongside their children and other youth from their community. The unique experience provides valuable mirroring & mentoring opportunities for the underserved youth who are the focus of our work. Tune in to watch their originally written play All in for Humanity. Edison Middle School Performance Preview

Edison Middle School students will share a recording of their live performance of their originally-written play from Fall 2019, “Monster Heist: Light vs. Dark.” The online viewing will be followed by a moderated post-show discussion of the play’s themes.* Synopsis: A gang of monsters that love stealing and their reluctant friend set their eyes on a magical stone that they heard was stored in a nearby museum. They quickly make a plan to steal the stone. While running out of the museum, they run into a teenage orphan alien. They find out that the orphan has a cool connection to the stone. The monsters use their powers to their advantage despite a reluctant friend who is getting close to the alien and wants all the mischief to stop. Little did the friend know that once they put their foot down, it would lead to an epic battle for family and…
